EXPLOSION A Chinese Film with a Bang

Explosion is a story of an unlucky mine expert who, through no fault of his own, is forced to run around the towns and mountains of northern China packing a small arsenal of homemade bombs that would make James Bond green with envy, while he tries to stay one step ahead of the cops and killers on his trail. Produced by the Huayi Brothers, this crime drama stars Duan Yihong (The Dead End) as a technician who is left as the sole survivor of an explosion in a mine shaft. When he begins to investigate the incident, some of his fellow miners are murdered and he is framed as the prime suspect. Wang Jingchun (Time Raiders) and Yu Nan (The Expendables 2) also star in Explosion. It is directed by Chang Zheng.

Influenced by stylish art cinema more than Hollywood, it starts off with quite a bang. Within the mine, a blast goes wrong and sends a flaming fireball racing through the shaft in a brief but effective disaster scene that leaves four workmen dead. There’s plenty more CGI explosive scenes to follow.

Of note is the excellent modern soundtrack by Zhang Yi-lin, which experiments with abstract rhythmic sounds in place of music to pump up the suspense.

We at amdb wish the team all the very best.
