Science fiction is a genre not every man can attempt or do . It’s extremely difficult to execute and only a few are there who have mastered this Genre like James Cameron , Steve Spielberg and George Lucas to name a few. The latest to attempt this genre on a massive Scale is Ace French director, producer Luc Besson can he join the list of the elite “SI FI”directors, lets find out.
In the 28th century, special operatives Major Valerian and Laureline work as a team to maintain order throughout the human territories in Space. Under assignment from the minister of defense, the duo embarks on a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where diverse species gather to share knowledge and culture. When a dark force threatens the peaceful city, Valerian and Laureline must race against time to identify the menace that also jeopardizes the future of the universe.
First things first , this is easily one of the most visual movies i have seen after Avatar . The world of Alpha is mysterious yet stunning , with so many different Species coming together it’s truly a visual treat. Some Sequences are on Par with Avatar and that is a big feat to accomplish big big feat. Some of the best companies have come together to accomplish this vision like Weta digital and ILM , and they have truly done a phenomenal job in bringing this massive vision to life. In terms of Visuals it’ s one of the best i have seen in a really long time.
However, the one biggest problems that lies in Valerian is the writing. Based on the Graphic novel on the same name, the narrative of Valerian is rather draggy. It’s clearly evident that the story has massive potential but the screenplay has let down the amazing story. Besson who is a master writer has clearly not been able to keep his A game up and that shows in the movie’s uninteresting narrative. No scene’s besides the visual effects scenes really leave you in awe for a moment, and that’s a big let down from the creator of Lucy.
Another Major let down is Mr. Valerian him self. Dane De Haan who played Harry Osborn in the Amazing Spiderman 2 is clearly a bad choice for the role. Dane who is supposed to play one of the best agents of the government of defense looks like a shabby teenager on weed. He’s not got an inch of macho ism or boyish manliness. A stunning example of Boyish manliness is Taron Edgerton in Kingsman The Secret Service. Dana who is talented is clearly out of his zone with this one . Cara Delevingne looks cute and beautiful , she’s a very talented actress who plays her part with conviction and ease. Cara has an Extremely bright future if she chooses the right scripts. A special mention to Rihanna who makes a brief appearance and makes sure you keep craving more of her.
Coming to the Action Laurent Demianoff who’s a regular at Europa and has worked on movies like Taken 2 and Colombiana puts together one decent sequence which has Cara in it. Aside from that theirs nothing worth mentioning no sequence leaves you jaw dropped .
On the Whole Valerian is a valiant effort from one of the most talented film makers we have seen. The question we asked was does Besson Join the elite film making club. The answer is ABSOLUTELY , though Valerian will not smash records at the Box Office Besson has shown that he can hold his own against any film maker. Besson has made a “Visual Master piece” and he should definitely take a bow.
We at amdb.in wish the entire team all the very best.
