This South Korean film is a story of forced labour, torture, and human slavery at its worst.\u00a0It is a Japanese occupation-era film about an attempted escape from a forced labor camp on Hashima Island, or depicted as hell island. Not meant to create anti-Japanese sentiment, the director, Ryoo Seung-Wan has defended this film as historical fiction, and shows how a man can become a monster.\u00a0Set in the time of World War 2, the story is about 400 plus Joseon people who risk their lives to escape Battleship Island which is where they were forcefully taken during the Japanese Invasion.<\/p>\n
Ryoo was inspired to write this ‘prison break’ storyline, after seeing an aerial view of the uniquely-shaped island. The film generated quite a buzz at the recent Cannes film festival.<\/p>\n
