Beating Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Wonder Woman has gone on to break numerous records worldwide. More than a month after its initial release date, the film isn’t slowing down—in fact, it’s officially shaping up to be the highest-grossing film of the summer, and the second highest-grossing film of the year.
Deadline reports that Wonder Woman is set to surpass Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this weekend when its domestic box office flies up to $387 million.
That makes Wonder Woman the fourth-biggest DC Comics movie ever, in terms of ticket sales, behind Superman: The Movie, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman and The Dark Knight.
An interesting analysis has been reported in CBR.com, that typically, superhero film audiences are dominated by male moviegoers; but with Wonder Woman there was an equal number of female viewers to male ones over it’s first three weeks. That’s a huge deal. The number of aged 50+ female audience members also went up over the film’s first few weeks by more than 20% than is typical for this type of film.
This really tells us that women have buying power on par with men when it comes to tentpole films, and it looks like, when targeted correctly, they will use said power. Film studios now have to throw out their excuse that female-led films tend to flop at the box office. Time to change, guys.
Here’s more power to women!
