And you thought you’d seen enough of Divergent and its extensions, well, not as yet. The young adult sci-fi flick will be turned into a TV series. Based on Veronica Roth’s bestselling books, Divergent is set in a futuristic society where people are broken up into social and personality-related factions.
Lionsgate’s subsidiary, Starz, has Adam Cozad and Lee Krieger on board to executive produce, write and direct the new Ascendant series. The story follows the film series that is set in the future dystopia where the city of Chicago’s walled-in five-faction autocracy is governed according to the personalities of the population’s young adults. Tris Prior is a young woman whose status as a divergent is regarded as a threat against the system, setting her on a dangerous journey fighting against the actions of a powerful and corrupt bureau responsible for genetic manipulation.
Divergent was a big hit in 2014, but the following sequels didn’t do as well. It was supposed to be a four-film series but the downward trend at the box office for the second film led to shelving the third one in favour of turning it into a TV series.
The cast of the new series has yet to be decided.
