NEWS BITE: Rick Famuyiwa, the Nigerian-American film director, producer, and screenwriter is in negotiations to direct the feature version of Son of Shaolin, which is based on the graphic novel created by Jay Longino. Famuyiwa is best known for directing Dope, the 2015 indie film about a group of teen geeks in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood who find themselves in a coming-of-age adventure.
Son of Shaolin will be a contemporary Kung-Fu story that intertwines Shaolin mythology with many of the current issues faced by teens growing up in a gentrified neighborhood. It will be a modern day martial arts movie influenced by classic Hong Kong cinema. Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia are producers of this Sony’s adaptation of the graphic novel.
