However, this Hollywood-style actioner Wolf Warrior 2 passed the $600M mark at the Middle Kingdom box office today. It’s also No. 3 on the list of all-time biggest grossers in a single market. Through Tuesday, the film had grossed $712M per research firm Ent Group. (That figure includes a roughly 7% online ticketing fee that China has been folding into their numbers since the beginning of the year.)
Considered a sort of a black sheep, this overtly nationalistic film, has the first time in recent years, been a runaway box office hit.
The action movie tells the story of former special forces soldier who stumbles into an African war zone, make-believe locations, mind you, and rescues Chinese citizens from Western mercenaries.
It became the country’s highest-grossing film just 12 days after its release on July 27. The movie’s release was on the 90th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army in China. The film, which stars martial artist Wu Jing, who also directed and co-wrote it, has also broken records by takings of over 200 million yuan every single day since release.
