In 1987 Legendary Action film producer was fresh off the success of Commando (1985) that starred Arnold and lethal Weapon( 1987) that Starred Mel Gibson. Silver was the go to guy for Action and all the studios wanted him the most was 20th century fox who offered him his next that would bring him and Arnold together again and it was none other than Predator .
The film had Arnold playing a special forces soldier who has to fight for his survival against an Alien . The film that was made on a budget of 18 million USD went on to becoming a smasher with over a 100 million at the box office.
From then Numerous attempts have been made to capitalize on the franchise however all have been failed attempts . The last film was released in 2010 and though it was not accepted by the critics the film did manage to put up 130 million world wide on a 40 million budget.
8 years later the franchise has once again been rebooted and this time they have brought out the big guns with Iron man 3 director Shane black directing the reboot . Will the latest installment stand out or has the franchise run its course let’s find out.
A young boy in suburban America receives a parcel which happens to have some technology that seems futuristic, the boy pics up a device and triggers it what he doesn’t know is that the device he is holding is a trigger to an Alien ship that is long looking to lock coordinates to Earth.
On the other side Quinn McKenna (Boyd Holbrook) an ex-U.S. Army soldier who has now turned a gun for hire is about to take down some bad guys in a Mexican hostage situation when he and his unit are distracted by a crashing space ship.
McKenna soons turns his attention towards the ship and ends up sole survivor of an encounter with its occupant; he flees however he is still scarred with the events of what he has encountered in mexico.
Meanwhile, evolutionary biologist Dr. Casey Brackett (Olivia Munn) is hijacked from her university job to a secret government lab where a “Predator” — one of several known to have visited Earth since 1987 — is being held captive under sedation.
What they learn is that each time the predator reaches earth it is an new and upgraded version of it’s self. McKenna, who by now has been re-absorbed by the military since the only living man who has encountered and survived the predator decides to put together a team crazy enough to take on the monster .
The team formed as the loonies are now the first and last hope of earth before the super Predator takes over once and for all.
To start with the novelty was lost in the 90’s its self as America got obsessed with Aliens the charm of the Predator was lost but what makes predator 2018 really work is the fact that black has revamped the Character to really intruding.
The script is paced like a bullet and doesn’t let you get bored even for a second along with witty oneliners A Shane black signature the film keeps you highly entertained.
The action is gory and the fast cuts make for a great watch, one can’t expect hand to hand sequences in these type of films but yes they have managed to add a few of those too. Stunt coordiator Lance Gilbert manages to put an interesting crew together to make the sequences compelling.
Of the performances Boyd holdbrook makes his presence really felt. A powehouse actor he shows he can hold his own in an action film, however the show belongs to non other than SHane black he proves the franchise has not run it’s course and has a space for it’s self in the congested world of American aliens.
On the whole The Predator is a fun watch , though you won’t feel the thrills of the first one you will still be highly entertained , the film is a winner at the box office With over 50 Million coming off the Domestic Run and a 150 million world wide and China too Looking to take a 20 million first frame and a 60 million plus life time and the Box Office is all that matters.
