Review of Hunter Killer

The Long in the Making Hunter Killer has finally hit theaters , the film that started production in 2016 is opening almost 2 and a half years later. There was multiple stories on the delay however all those are speculations. The Bottom line is does the film live up to the hype lets find out.

After an American submarine vanishes while shadowing a Russian sub in the Arctic, Rear Admiral John Fisk sends another U.S. submarine, the USS Arkansas, under the command of newly-promoted and unconventional Commander Joe Glass to investigate what happened.

This is the first time Joe is commanding the Vessel and is meeting his new crew they set to the ocean. On the other side Jayne Norquist The NSA’s adviser meets with Admiral John Fisk and tells him there is more that meets the eye and she would like  boots on a covert mission into Russia to see what’s what.

Navy SEAL team under the command of Lieutenant Bill Beaman is sent in to discreetly observe a Russian marine base.  However they soon realize  defence minister Dmitri Durov take Russian President Zakarin prisoner, and swiftly realize that he intends to start  a war with America.

Arkansas discovers the lost American sub, but also finds a sunken Russian submarine, damaged in a manner that suggests internal sabotage rather than external attack and soon realize that this whole incident is an internal hand. However in the process they recover Russian submarine captain Sergei Andropov and his 2 men who managed to survive. Before they can report They are attacked by another Russian submarine that has been watching events hidden under an iceberg.

A cat and mouse game between the two Sub takes place where Arkansas succeeds . The American government realizes that it’s an act of war by Russia Admiral Charles Donnegan ( Gary Olman) recommends preparing for war exactly what Defense minister Dmitri wants.

A lot of pressure is building up on Madam President to take a call on either holding on or launching a full out war , however before she can make her decision  Admiral John Fisk makes the suggestion that  Arkansas be sent in to rendezvous into Russian Waters that is filled with mines, Sonar censors and Basically all sorts of devices to make it a death mission.

Commander Joe Glass must use the help of  captain Sergei Andropov to guide the Arkansas into Russian Waters to rescue the president of Russia. Will they make it there alive and can the ground team lead by Lieutenant Bill Beaman manage to get the President to the Extraction point makes the rest of the tale.

Written by Arne Schmidt and Jamie Moss adapted from the Novel by Don Kieth . To straighten things out it’s extremely difficult to write a film that got 70 % of it’s scenes inside a tube . However the writers add on multiple simultaneous tracks to make the script engaging and that makes for a very solid base for Hunter Killer.

Debutante director Donovan Marsh makes for a impressive debut , it’s not easy to helm a film of this scale and he does a good job at it.   He plays the Characters in the apt way and really builds on the key movements and thrills. He’s definitely someone to look out for .

What else Stands out is the visual effects done by Producer Avi Lerner’s Own World Wide visual effects the under water sequences really give a grim and claustrophobic feel to what a Sailor must be going through . The Visual effects both under and over water really upped the scale of the film and gave it a grand feel.

The Close combat and gun fights pick up an hour into the film and though it’s a bit delayed when it comes it’s compelling  and engaging. Stunt coordinators Paul Herbert and fight Choreo Georgi Manchiv put together some well thought out gun fights.

Coming to the Actors the film belongs to Gerard Butler. Butler who’s the new Millennium films favorite puts a calm yet deeply engaging performance. The only down side is that he doesn’t throw a punch but a fine performance he does put up.  Gary Oldman who plays Admiral Charles Donnegan doesn’t deliver anything exceptional for an Actor of his caliber he needed to be written better he’s wasted in the film. Toby Stephens as U.S. Navy SEAL Lieutenant Bill Beaman was another great performance that stood out As did Common as Admiral John Fisk. However one performance that truly was exceptional was Micheal Nyqvist as Captain Sergei Andropov, Commander of a Russian submarine . He had no more than 4 lines in  the film and his acting was conveyed through his eyes he was a scene steal .

Films like Crimson tide have set some sort of bench marks however they are not entertaining when you have the 2 best actors in the world ( Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington ) and still the film looses you there’s a problem . Hunter Killer is an engaging and entertaining watch . Had there been a Gerry Butler fight and sharper start the film would have done even better. However it’s the best watch of the week so catch it. A big shout out to producers Avi Lerner, Yariv Lerner, Niel Mortz ,the  late and great John Thompson and President of Millennium films Jonathan Yunger for pulling this off.

We at amdb.in wish the entire team all the very best.
