Birth of the Dragon is the next attempt at a Bruce Lee movie (the press release is careful to point out that it’s “loosely inspired” by a specific event in his life). George Nolfi is the (The Adjustment Bureau) director, while Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen Rivele wrote the screenplay.
Birth of the Dragon focuses on the story of Bruce Lee’s fight with San Francisco martial arts teacher, a Sha Lin monk and Kung fu master, Wong Jack Man. The fight which, legend has it, helped inspire Lee to create Jeet Kune Do, a form of Chinese Kung fu, yet without form. The two had a feud during the early days of Lee’s career, when both were teaching martial arts in California. Philip Ng will play Bruce Lee and Xia Yu is playing Wong Jack Man.
There are some fictionalized elements in story, but the legendary fight is the main highlight of the film.
Bruce Lee believed real combat was spontaneous, and a martial artist cannot predict it, but only react to it, and a good martial artist should “be like water”—move fluidly without hesitation.
The film will be in cinemas on August 25th.
