It’s always a tough choice when selecting directors for a big block-buster film. There are huge budgets, and the story must lead into the next franchise. After much ado, the man for the job is James Wan, why him? Here’s what Toby Emmerich, film chairman at Warner Bros., says about choosing a horror film director, James Wan, to helm the Aquaman film:
‘He’s a franchise maker and builder. I would give him credit for what became known as The Conjuring universe. He initiated the Saw franchise. And he initiated the Insidious franchise. And he built on the Fast and Furious franchise — his film Furious 7 was the highest grossing one. So when you think of franchise makers and franchise builders there are not many people who have that resume. That alone makes him an inspired choice. And he’s also made many movies as a director and producer for us at Warner Bros. and at New Line. So we know him really well.’
The story of Aquaman revolves around the reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between those who live on land constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt. But, Aquaman is committed to protecting the entire world – that’s the overview of his character, the main plot details of the story are still under wraps.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Orm Marius/Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, and Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko. The film centers on Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and will dive much deeper into the character’s past as it explores the discovery of his powers and his reluctance to accept his role as King.
Aquaman is currently slated to hit theaters on December 21, 2018.
