The critically-acclaimed Watchmen comic series is being adapted as an HBO TV show, based on the DC graphic novel from Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. It is set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws. The series will debut in 2019. Damon Lindelof is the writer and executive producer, and Nicole Kassell as director and executive producer of the pilot.
It is expected that the series will expand the Watchmen universe, rather than stick to the re-telling of the story from the graphic novel. It will have a new story in the same world, but new characters set in the present day. Lindelof also said that the show will be influenced by contemporary politics and figures like Donald Trump, Theresa May and Vladimir Putin in the same way the original was very much a product of the Cold War. The series will focus on how the world has evolved since Ozymandias carried out his staged attack and tricked the US and Soviet Union into forging peace.
The cast includes: Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon.
