The Batman villain, the JOKER, is being considered as a lead character in a movie. The Hangover director Todd Phillips is negotiating with Warner Bros and DC Entertainment to direct and co-write the film. Martin Scorcese is rumoured to be involved with the untitled film, reportedly to be set in the 80s.
Can the JOKER really carry his own movie?
The JOKER has always been popular, right from the 1960s, when Adam West starred as Batman and Cesar Romero was the favourite Joker. Later, Jack Nicholson wowed the audiences as the nemesis faced by Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight. Heath Ledger’s unforgettable performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight won him an Academy Award after his sudden death. Jared Leto also starred as the Joker in the recent film, Suicide Squad.
WB/DC seems to have gained confidence after the phenomenal success of Wonder Woman. And they are keen to expand their cinematic universe. This new move will give them a comparative edge with Marvel Studios who are way ahead in the kingdom of superhero films. It doesn’t look like Marvel is planning a film on any of their villains anytime soon.
Batman’s villains are unforgettable, and that is probably why WB/DC will take a chance on this film. In the cinematic universe, making a Joker film is no laughing matter, but it’s still worth the risk.
